I will start by saying that I loved Enemies of the State and was looking forward to another Tal Bauer. This one though did not work for me. I also only made it to 43% before I gave up. if it gets better after that, please disregard my reviewFirst, it was the liberal use of metaphors even where they didn't seem to add value to the scene. Then there was the 365, 366, 367 days count. The first one was good enough. But the part that finally made it put it down was how improbable the characters' actions were.**POSSIBLE SPOILERS**There is the fact that this agent who is now in charge of the president's life never checks in with anyone, he is the only one on the round-the-clock detail, the president travels with him in a loaner SUV, again, with just the one agent who is also the driver. The ex-military, stoic new president also has no trouble having some action in the oval, just a couple of days in office. The agent falls asleep in the oval, crumbles downstairs and around pillars. there is no medical staff at Camp David with 7 other heads of state on site.It was all too much.I will try another Tal Bauer but this just didn't do it for me. I had a favorite Tal Bauer book. And then I read this one and now I have a NEW favorite Tal Bauer book.Bauer is a skilled suspense writer. He has the ability to create a complicated web of action and intrigue that keeps the reader so invested that you experience that bit of disorientation when you are done with his books. You know, that moment where you are confused because the characters are still on the page while your reality slowly comes back into focus. Well he combines that skill with political machinations and details that draw the reader in and totally don’t let you go. Then, yes, there’s more, there is a romance. And not just any romance. Nope. In this book, not only was the romance fantastic, and HOT, but he managed to drop us into the middle of the “big misunderstanding” and still had us rooting for these two to get their happily ever after.Sean Avery is struggling when we meet him. He is so broken and holding himself together with sheer will. Jonathan Sharp is facing a nightmare of grief. And the two of them have a history that could tear them apart. When Tal gets his hands on these two men, all bets are off. There is so much that they must face as they investigate the death of their friend. I was so blown away by the consistent level of tension in this book. It is a top notch political thriller interspersed with the hottest romance. There are twists that I never saw coming. The resolution of this book is perfectly timed and, other than a massive book hangover, left me with the best feelings a great book can leave. Thank you, Tal Bauer, for the adventure.
